Panic Attack Treatment

The physical sensations associated with panic attacks are a terrifying feeling. Frequent panic attacks can negatively impact your life. Fortunately, panic attack treatment is available to help you manage and reduce the incidence.

What are panic attacks?

Panic attacks are a sudden, overwhelming feeling of fear accompanied by physical and psychological symptoms. Since panic attacks are rooted in fear, they’re often associated with anxiety or anxiety attacks. But there are differences. Anxiety attacks have similar symptoms but are connected to a specific trigger, vary in intensity, last longer, and can start gradually. Panic attacks, on the other hand, come quickly out of nowhere. They’re disruptive and severe but generally only last a short time.

Fear and panic are necessary for survival. But panic attacks occur when the normal response to fear is unnecessarily activated. When the brain perceives danger, the amygdala in the brain sends a signal for the body to release adrenaline (the fight-or-flight hormone). This activates the symptoms of a panic attack. When this happens to your body for no apparent reason, it causes confusion, fear, and a feeling of being out of control, making symptoms worse.

It’s unclear why some people experience these symptoms without a trigger. Panic attacks seem to run in families, so there’s likely a genetic predisposition. Therapy for panic attacks can help mitigate the frequency and severity.

How does medication therapy for panic attacks help?

Panic attack treatment is similar to anxiety treatment. My therapy for panic attacks attempts to prevent and manage episodes through medication to moderate physiological imbalances.

The medications most used for panic attacks are anti-anxiety medications like benzodiazepines and antidepressants. These include SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and SNRIs (serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors). Beta-blockers can also help with your symptoms on an as-needed basis.

Many people avoid panic attack treatment because they don’t think they need it, or they attempt to control the symptoms on their own. But this can lead to further health complications, including substance abuse, isolation, or other issues. If you’re experiencing any of the above symptoms, I can help you take back control of your life through therapy for panic attacks.
